Original Lecture notes:

Because GBA was a new venture, unlike any of it’s kind in the United Kingdom, David Hand created a training school for his animators and directors. This school was much like the training school in which he participated while he was a Director at the Disney Studios. In the GBA School he tried to teach “the Disney way”, adding in his own style and vast experience.

Some lectures are originally typed, some are copies. However, all came from on or near the date of the lecture and were the working documents of David Hand. Many have notes that David added in his own hand. They are on legal sized paper. Some have David Hand's original signature or initials.

Many documents are transcriptions taken during the lectures and are in a combination of lecture and Question and Answer format. Some are drafts.

These Lectures are sold in lots:

Lot #1 – Lectures 1 – 11, dated 15th August, 1946 Through 21st November, 1946 Copies, some with hand written notes

Anecdotal Cartoons drawn by David D. Hand:

When David Hand closed GB Animation in 1950, he returned to the United States and moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado, where he joined the Alexander Film Studios for the next 18 years. He then moved to Cambria, California. In his spare time, he created a large series of anecdotal cartoons, which he sent to various magazines and had success in having some published.

The original drawings were created with pen and ink and then enhanced in water color. Most color has faded to the eye on the original work, but the drawings are vibrant. When we scanned the drawings to make copies, using the Photoshop program, it was possible to enhance the picture and bring out the original colors.

Almost all of the pictures are signed. They are mostly drawn on 8.5" x 11" paper. Some have David Hand's hand written editorial notes. Where text was required to describe the action, such text was created to underscore the pictures. Some have typewritten text which is pasted to the bottom of the picture. A few of the pictures are "workin progress."

Price of the complete set of 188, 8.5" x 11" presentations: $1,880.00

Cartoon Collection:

One hundred & seventy six (176) of the Anecdotal Cartoons were scanned in Photoshop and edited into a booklet, four cartoons to a page. A short article on David Hand is inserted on the inside front cover. During the scanning, the original color was enhanced. The pages are printed on 8.5" x 11", glossy paper and "Velo-bound" under a clear plastic sheet.

Signed note from J. Arthur Rank:

An original note from J. Arthur Rank to David D. Hand, noted to be "Xmas 1947." The formality between Rank and David Hand is interesting in as much as the relationship between the two was in the form of a Joint Venture Partnership. The note brings in his wife (my step mother) but is not addressed to her.

As background, the Studio came into being in 1944. The location of the Studio in Cookham, Berkshire became available in 1945. It must be kept in mind that though there was a "Studio," there was nothing else. No personnel, no equipment, the property was not set up as a Studio, etc. David Hand spent the next four years creating a facility, staff and product out of nothing. 1948 was the target date to actually produce something. To this point, Rank had put out funds, but had seen no kind of financial return.

The note says "Dear Mr. Hand
In a few days we shall once more be in the midst of Christmas festivaties so I write to wish you a very Merry Christmas. May 1948 be a year full of happiness for your both. I know that you are looking forward to seeing some of the fruits of your planning & labor in 1948. It has been a hard & long row but I hoppe you will soon have a great encouragment from the happiness your productions are going to give. Yours Very Sincerely, J. Arthur Rank"

Price for the Rank note: $800.00

PRODUCTION MODEL SHEETS:

These Model sheets were used by David Hand in his production work. Though we have only single copies in his collection, there are a few of which we have several copies. In making scan copies of these pictures we have tried to be as true to the original as is possible so the viewer can see the blemishes, notes, color and quality of the pictures. The sizes noted are approximate. We can only assume that the person who made the copies was working with non-standard stock and cut the pictures as they saw fit.

Disney Model Sheets:

David Hand was not a great collector. These six model sheets were the only work kept from his tenure at Disney. As Production Supervisor for the Studio, he would have had complete sets of everything that the Studio produced. He left his mark on every film, feature or short produced between 1930 and 1944.

These sheets are production copies. The DUMBO, PRISSY, FANTASIA, and PINOCCHIO are all approximately 11" x 14" in sizw. The 'OUNDS are 9.5" x 12".
